About Me

Lauren Reno

Hey there! My name is Lauren Reno, and I’m a senior at Drake University. Originally from Bloomington, Illinois, I ventured out to Des Moines, Iowa in 2013 and I plan to stick around after graduating this May. I’m a Magazine Journalism and English double major, and am currently searching for a Communications position in Des Moines.

My interests include taking walks and exploring new places, hiding out at adorable coffee shops and cuddling up with a good book. I also have a passion for health and fitness, so you can always catch me sweating it out at the gym, or researching new workouts. I love learning and experiencing new things, and giving myself opportunities to be creative.

Involvement

During my time at Drake, I’ve enjoyed getting involved around campus as well as the surrounding community. I’m a member of the social sorority Kappa Kappa Gamma, which has given me so many amazing opportunities to develop leadership skills, make lasting relationships and volunteer my time to worthy causes. I have volunteered with Reading is Fundamental, Ronald McDonald Charities and Habitat for Humanity, as well as other organizations. During my second year at Drake, I got involved in Drake’s Writing Workshop where I was trained and became a tutor. In that position, I guided fellow Drake students through their writing assignments and helped them with grammar, structure and content. I also produced content for Drake’s Student Senate website, as well as Drake Magazine.

Experience

I gained a lot of writing experience during my time at Drake and my English and Journalism classes. Additionally, I also took a lot away from my past work experiences. My first internship after my Sophomore year was with the Iowa Medical Society, where I served as a Communications and Marketing Assistant. There, I wrote press releases and created a weekly newsletter. I worked with the newsletter analytics to create strategies moving forward. I also had the opportunity to assist in the creation and execution of a social media campaign for a major event.

The summer after that, I interned with Wellmark Blue Cross and Blue Shield. As the Technology division’s Communications Intern, my responsibilities included writing internal communications and creating content for the monthly newsletter. I also assisted in the planning and execution of events, as well as working on an agile team to help create an application for internal use.

Senior year, I took my Journalism Senior Capstone class, which was one of the most beneficial experiences throughout my college career. For this class, my classmates and I were required to manage the online publication Urban Plains as a group. I served as a Senior Editor and Content Producer at Urban Plains, where I acquired strong collaborative skills, as well as an ability to work independently and with little guidance. From this experience, I was able to learn from my peers, and gained a true appreciation for teamwork in the workplace. I also learned how to be flexible when things didn’t go as planned.

What’s next?

After graduation in May I hope to begin a career in Communications or Marketing, and have the opportunity to utilize the skills I have acquired over the years. I am very grateful for my experiences at Drake, and I can’t wait to begin my next adventure!
